PHUKET: There were no new coronavirus cases reported in Friday's update, but public health officials reiterated warnings against gatherings during the present Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The Provincial Committee of Communicable Disease on Friday said the island province had found no new Covid-19 patients and the total number of confirmed cases remained at 217, with two deaths, since Jan 5.

Phuket has the second largest number of confirmed infections, after Bangkok.

Muslims make up about 35% of inhabitants on the island. They are fasting during the day for the month of Ramadan, which started on April 23, and traditionally gather to eat after sundown.

The Provincial Public Health Office on Friday reminded them there must be no public activities in mosques,  or other places, to avoid the possible spread of the disease.

People should wear masks and keep at least a one-metre apart when at home during the holy month, it added.
