NAKHON PHANOM: A fisherman drowned in the middle of the Mekong river when three small fishing boats capsized during a violent storm in That Phanom district on Monday afternoon, local media reported.

The storm also pummelled riverside communities in tambon Nam Klam.

Rescuers battled the storm on jetskis in middle of the river. They rescued two fishermen about 50 metres from the shore and a third about 100m away.

They were unable to save one fisherman, who drowned in the river. His body was retrieved after the storm subsided.

He was Tawatchai Srisuphan, 36.

Rescuers said the three fishermen had no safety gear on their small boats.
