NAKHON RATCHASIMA: A man was injured and a cow killed when a thunderbolt struck in Phimai district on Monday afternoon, local media reported.

Prachuap Rakrai, 53, a villager of Moo 12 village in tambon Rangka Yai, said the thunderbolt strike occurred in the middle of a field near Moo 4 village in tambon Rangka Yai.

Mr Prachuap said that on Monday morning he and Thanayot Boonsiri went out into the field with 10 cows, about five kilometres from the village.

At about 1.20am when he and Mr Thanayot were resting under the shade of banana trees watching the cows grazing grass, the sky turned cloudy, followed by sparse rain. A thunderbolt suddenly struck in the middle of the herd, killing one of the cows on the spot. At the same time, Mr Thanayot who was sitting by him collapsed and went unconscious.

Mr Prachuap said he called for help from villagers. A rescue unit later arrived and took Mr Thanayot to a hospital.

He said the dead cow was a five-year-old Brahman, about four months pregnant, for which he had paid 52,000 baht.
