KHON KAEN: China has given 100,000 face masks for distribution to officials and ordinary people in this northeastern province to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

The face masks were handed over to Somsak Changtrakul, the Khon Kaen governor, by Liao Junyun, the consular-general at the Chinese Consulate in the province in a ceremony held at the city hall on Tuesday.

Mr Somsak said the face masks represented Chinese President Xi Jinping's concerns for the Thai people in the Covid-19 crisis.

In the name of Khon Kaen's people, he thanked China for its concerns about Thailand during the pandemic.

He said the masks would be further distributed to various government units in the provinces as well as residents in need of them.

China has faced criticism for its so-called "mask diplomacy" around the world.
