TAK: Police raided a house in Mae Sot district used as a hub for online gambling, seized a large quantity of gambling equipment and arrested 25 Thai and foreign employees on Saturday.

Armed with a search warrant issued by the Mae Sot Court, a team of immigration and Mae Sot police led by Pol Col Sangkom Tadso, the Tak immigration police chief, raided the house at a village in tambon Mae Pa, Mae Sot district.

The house was found to have been used as an operations base for online gambling. Authorities arrested 25 employees -- five of them Thai nationals and 20 foreigners, most of them Chinese. The employees worked in three shifts, eight hours each, around the clock.

The authorities seized many items in the raid including seven computers, 14 smartphones with 2,000-2,500 SIM cards and 50 bank accounts holding at total of about 100 million baht.

Pol Lt Gen Sompong Chingduang, chief of the Immigration Police Bureau, said online gambling in various forms had increased during the spread of Covid-19, as people were asked to stay at home to contain the virus.

An investigation was underway to find the operators of the gambling den and seize their assets, he said.
