Govt should create jobs, cut taxes to reduce unemployment: Poll

Most people want the government to create job opportunities and reduce taxes, along with taking other measures, to ease the ongoing unemployment crisis, according to the result of an opinion survey by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, or Suan Dusit Poll.

The poll was conducted online between June 1-5 on 1,038 people throughout the country to compile their opinions on ways of solving the unemployment problem gripping the country. Each respondent was allowed to give more than one answer.

Asked what has caused the current unemployment, 88.18% blamed it on Covid-19; 74,03% the economic slump; 46.22% the shutdown of businesses; 45.35% lack of jobs in the labour market; and 21.12% said some people are choosy about jobs.

Asked to identify problems caused by unemployment, 88.91% cited debts; 85.73% stress and mental health problems; 73.48% poverty; 73.29% family problems; 67.60% theft; 60.08% suicide; 52.75% fraud and cheating; and 42.82% corrupt practices.

Asked what the government should to do to address the unemployment crisis, 71.00% want it to create job opportunities; 63.82% reduce taxes; 58.58% provide people with subsidies and subsistence allowances; 54.22% provide job training; and 44.91% help people find sources of investment capital and low-interest loans.
