Destitute families to relocate soon

Ten families living underneath a section of the Rama IX expressway in Bangkok have decided to resettle at a public housing area and receive job training, according to the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.

They are members of a 112-strong community living under the expressway. The ministry reached out to them during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The community has been on the ministry's radar due to the size of the group, 43 of whom are deaf.

One month after a visit by Social Development and Human Security Minister Chuti Krairiksh, 10 families agreed to relocate to the Lat Lum Kaeo 2 accommodation operated by the National Housing Authority in Pathum Thani's Muang district.

Sombat Phonimdaeng, 64, head of a family of three, said his family is looking forward to new opportunities. He was born and raised in the ramshackle expressway settlement.

Mr Sombat currently makes a living as a motorcycle mechanic and he has signed up for an air conditioning repair course to make extra money for the family.
