PHETCHABUN: Two villages in Nong Phai district of this mountainous central northern province were inundated by flash flooding following heavy rain on Sunday night.

Chantrapa Sukhan, assistant head of Moo 1 village in tambon Yang Ngam, said the rain began about 9pm and continued into the night.

Runoff from Wang Haew mountain poured into a downstream canal.

About 4am on Monday, the canal overflowed in Moo 1 and Moo 3 villages, Mr Chantrapa said. The roads were soon under 30-50 centimetres of water, which spread into about 60 households.

The strong current caused embankments on both sides of the canal to crumble.

Ms Chantrapa said damage was still being assessed.
