More flights have been arranged to take home another 1,000 Thais in Egypt next month in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the government spokeswoman.

The government had earlier brought 410 returnees home on two flight on May 8 and June 9, Narumon Pinyosinwat said on Tuesday.

Another 690 have registered to go home with the Thai embassy in Cairo.

There are now 4,137 Thais in Egypt and the embassy is checking whether more of them would like to go home.

According to earlier reports, 38 Thais there tested positive of coronavirus disease.

Next month, the government has made an arrangement to bring another 1,000 home on four flights, about 250 each, on July 3, 8, 17 and 24, Ms Narumon said.

Video conference calls have been made to allow Thais there to seek advice from doctors on how to take care of themselves and to learn basic knowledge of the virus.

Line groups have also been set up to facilitate communication so Thai students and workers in Egypt can quickly get advice from health officials in Thailand.

Mrs Narumon said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was closely monitoring the situation.

"Thai people in Egypt need not worry because the government is taking good care of them," she said.
