Police to charge all in emergency room brawl

Police will press assault and trespassing charges against everyone involved in a brawl at Prachomklao Hospital in Phetchaburi's Muang district on Wednesday.

Pol Maj Sarawut Malai, deputy chief of Muang Phetchaburi police station, on Thursdaysaid police reviewed footage of the fight and all those involved in the violence will initially be charged with "assault" and "trespassing on state property".

The brawl stemmed from a prior altercation between two young men aged 17 and 20 at a restaurant which resulted in the two being sent to Prachomklao Hospital's emergency room on Wednesday night.

The 17-year-old sustained head injuries and claimed he was hit by a glass thrown at him by the 20-year-old, identified only as Prakaifa, who also received injuries requiring treatment.

Friends of the pair later arrived at the emergency room and fighting broke out. About 10 police officers were sent to the hospital to deal with the disturbance.

Pol Maj Sarawut said police were identifying people in the footage and will begin summoning them all for questioning. He said the 17-year-old and Prakaifa will also be charged separately in connection with the violence at the restaurant.

Dr Amphorn Benjaphonpitak, inspector-general of the Public Health Ministry's 5th Health District, said hospital management was told to take legal action against both groups.

She praised the head nurse at the emergency room for her quick response to the violence. The nurse reportedly alerted security guards and police and also secured the emergency room so that medical services were not disrupted.

The 17-year-old later told police he ran away after being assaulted by Prakaifa at the restaurant. However, he said he found a knife and stabbed his rival in self-defence during the second encounter.
