Crime Suppression Division (CSD) police arrested 22 suspected gamblers in a crackdown on suspected gambling venues in various areas in Bangkok and nearby provinces on Saturday night.

Pol Maj Gen Suwat Saengnoom, the CSD commander, said the crackdown was part of ongoing efforts to contain Covid-19 after crowded gambling dens were linked to the latest outbreak.

On Saturday night, CSD teams were deployed in various areas -- including Bang Phlat, Nakhon Chai Si road, Pathumwan, Paet Sip Hong community, Rot Fai 3 community and Bang Yi Rua -- where gambling was suspected to be in operation.

The police arrested 22 suspects in five raids and seized numerous artefacts used for card games.

The suspects were handed over to local police stations for further legal proceedings.

The latest raids came days after the CSD conducted 10 sweeps against various types of gambling in the Central, North and Northeast regions on June 7-9, netting 46 suspects.

A large quantity of gambling equipment was seized in the earlier raids, including slot machines and various types of computer game machines.
