NAKHON PHANOM: Two villages in That Phanom district have been placed under lockdown after a woman vendor was diagnosed with Covid-19 - the first infection in this northeastern border province.

The 14-day lockdown of Moo 8 and Moo 15 villages in tambon Phra Klang Thung was ordered by governor Kraisorn Kongchalad, as chairman of the provincial communicable disease committee. The two villages' combined population is about 200.

The infected woman, 51, sells food at Ban Nong Khaen, or Moo 8 village.

An initial investigation found that the woman had been in close contact with a person who came from Bangkok for a home visit on Dec 28. On returning to Bangkok, that person had tested positive for Covid-19.

This prompted the woman to go to Phra That Phanom Hospital for testing on Tuesday. The result was positive, although she was asymptomatic. She is being treated at That Phanom Crown Prince Hospital.

Five people who were close to her have also been tested. They were negative, but have been quarantined for observation.

Sorayut Thongyos, the kamnan of tambon Phra Klang Thung, said health volunteers had  been instructed to closely monitor the health of all people in the two villages.
