Sailors win online praise for daring cat rescue

Cat lovers are continuing to follow up the wellbeing of four cats that were rescued from a capsized ship near Ko Adang in Satun earlier this week.

Almost 7,000 Facebook users "liked" and about 2,500 gave positive comments on the Facebook page of the Royal Thai Navy which shared pictures of the cats. The post said they were under good care.

The Thai navy sailors braved choppy waters to launch a daring rescue operation on Tuesday after discovering four cats had been abandoned on a sinking ship that caught fire off Koh Lipe. After the crew was taken to safety, the navy was sent to the site of the capsized vessel to check for an oil spill, but discovered a few crew members had been forgotten. "I used my camera to zoom in to the boat, and I saw one or two cats popping their heads out," said Petty Officer First-Class Wichit Pukdeelon of the navy's air and coastal defence division. A sailor in a life vest swam out to the capsized boat, on which four ginger cats were huddled together on a wooden beam. The rescuer brought the cats to his boat on his shoulders, with his team pulling him in by rope.

In other news, a woman in Trang is seeking help, saying her only son was severely injured while serving in the military two years ago.

The woman, identified as Papitchaya, 57, is preparing to petition the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to look into the injuries of her son Prajak, 26, allegedly injured while serving at Wing 26 in Songkhla.

The military, who contacted her in May 2019 to take him home, allegedly said he was injured while trying to escape punishment and fell, and that alleged mental health issues started before he enlisted in 2017.
