'Ice' found in bags before NZ flight

A parcel containing 520 grammes of crystal methamphetamine stuffed inside seven women's shoulder bags has been found at Suvarnabhumi Airport before a flight to New Zealand.

Wichai Chaimongkol, secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), said the parcel was about to be sent via a flight from Suvarnabhumi Airport to a foreigner in New Zealand on June 2. However, airport staff intercepted it first.

The Narcotics Suppression Bureau in Thailand was looking into the identity of the sender. New Zealand police had also been informed and asked to help track down the intended recipient.

Drugs pass through Thailand on their way to third countries such as New Zealand. Favourite exports are crystal methamphatamine or "ice", and heroin.

Drugs authorities had made good progress in seizing drugs in Thailand, he said. From January-May, Thai officials seized 29,369kg of ice and 2,387kg of heroin inside the country, he said.

Regarding a seizure of 316kg of ice in Australia on May 4, investigations had made good progress. The ONCB found more than 10 people were involved in the case.

"We are gathering evidence to take legal action against these people," he said.

The drugs were found concealed in electric barbecue grills and water heaters on a cargo ship docked in Sydney.

Police intercepted the Thai cargo vessel at Port Botany on May 4, where 62 large cardboard boxes were searched.

"We admit some drugs have been smuggled out successfully to third countries such as Malaysia, Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region), the Philippines, South Korea and Australia. But the quantity of these smuggled drugs is still less than what we have been able to seize inside the country," Mr Wichai said.
