Thailand's total Covid-19 caseload crossed 200,000 on Tuesday morning as the Public Health Ministry reported 3,000 new cases and 19 fatalities over the past 24 hours.

There were 2,360 cases in the general population and 640 among prison inmates.

Over the past 24 hours, 4,774 novel coronavirus patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals.

Since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began, the number of new cases has reached 173,401, 135,292 of whom have recovered.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been a total of 202,264 Covid-19 cases, 162,718 of whom recovered.

The death toll is now 1,391 from the third wave and 1,485 since the beginning of the pandemic early last year.

Details from briefing

Apisamai Srirangson, spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said in the afternoon that the 19 new fatalities were 34-92 years old. Eleven were male and eight female.

They consisted of 11 in Bangkok, three in Samut Prakan, two in Saraburi and one each in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Prachin Buri and Yala.

Ten had hypertension. Six contracted Covid-19 from family members and another five from colleagues, from a hospital patient or from air-conditioner technicians.

The 3,000 new cases over the past 24 hours included 2,355 local infections and five imported cases.

Of the local infections, 1,814 were confirmed at hospitals and 541 via mass testing.

Bangkok logged the most cases – 872 -- followed by nearby provinces, with 336 in Samut Prakan, 202 in Pathum Thani and 163 in Samut Sakhon.

There were 88 new cases in Nakhon Pathom, 76 in Ranong, 72 in Chachoengsao, 61 in Pattani, 57 in Songkhla and 56 in Nonthaburi.

The capital had 85 clusters of infections, including a new cluster of 96 cases among 363 workers at a construction workers’ camp by a Supalai condominium project at Fai Chai intersection in Bangkok Noi district. The camp was closed and mass testing was launched there and in nearby communities, Dr Apisamai said.

The number of cases among construction workers was causing a shortage of hospital beds for male patients in Bangkok because most infected construction workers were men. Admission of male patients could be delayed in the next few days, she said.

Samut Prakan found two new clusters – 63 cases at a crispy snack factory in Bang Sao Thong district and 10 new cases at a condominium in Phra Pradaeng district.

Chachoengsao also found two more clusters – 13 cases at a recycling company in Phanom Sarakham district and 17 cases at an auto parts company in Ban Pho district.

Samut Sakhon recorded one new cluster of 10 cases at a cardboard paper box factory in Muang district.

Nakhon Pathom logged one new cluster of 16 cases at a company in Samphran district.

The five newly imported cases were from Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Belgium and Cambodia (an female Thai returnee arrested after sneaking across the border in Chanthaburi province).

As of Monday, 38,061 people were receiving treatment for the novel coronavirus at hospitals, including 1,249 critically ill people and 365 dependent on ventilators.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 300,347 in 24 hours to 177.03 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 6,729 to 3.83 million. The United States had the most cases at 34.33 million, up 10,010.
