32 Covid deaths, 3,667 new cases

Bangkok remains epicentre, with new daily records in both deaths and new cases

Health authorities reported 32 Covid-19 fatalities and 3,667 new cases on Saturday, bringing the accumulated toll since the start of the pandemic to 1,609 deaths and 214,449 cases.

Of the new cases, 3,232 were in the general population and 435 in prisons, according to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration. 

A total of 4,948 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals over the previous 24 hours.

Since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began, there have been 185,586 Covid-19 patients, 181,358 of whom have recovered.

The CCSA reported that the death cases were aged 40-89, or 64.5 on average. Fifteen of them were male.

Of the 32 new fatalities, 19 were in Bangkok. Three deaths each were reported in Nakhon Pathom and Samut Prakan, two each Phetchaburi and Khon Kaen and one death each in Samut Sakhon, Chon Buri and Chachoengsao.

Twenty-two of them had hypertension and 15 had diabetes. Seven had been infected by family members and nine had contracted the virus from friends and other people.

The 3,667 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours consisted of 3,200 local infections, 435 in prisons and 32 imported cases. Of the local infections, 2,095 were confirmed at hospitals, 1,105 via mass testing, 

Bangkok had the most new cases, at 1,218. Samut Prakan logged 495 cases, Samut Sakhon 171, Pathum Thani, 167, and Chon Buri 145.

The 32 imported cases were Thai returnees from Ethiopia (3), Bahrain (1), South Africa (1), and Cambodia (27). Of the returnees from Cambodia, 10 — six men and four women — had entered the country via natural border crossing.

Of the 31,482 hospitalised people, 1,343 were seriously ill, including 383 dependent on ventilators.

As for vaccination progress, a total of 7.48 million Covid-19 vaccine doses were administered as of Friday, accounting for 11.3% of the population.

Of them, 5.43 million were first doses and 2.04 million were second jabs. The vaccine made by Sinovac Biotech led in both, representing 3.3 milllion and 2 million respectively. The rest were made by AstraZeneca.

Global Covid-19 cases rose 400,897 in 24 hours to 178.59 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 8,523 to 3.86 million. The United States had the most cases at 34.39m, up 13,389. Thailand ranked 78th.
