Ex-cop accused of stealing car after fake test drive

A former police officer was arrested in Bangkok's Phasi Charoen district for stealing a car from a showroom in Bangkok, police said on Sunday.

Police arrested Pol Col Phansiri Sripen, 62, ex-superintendent of Police Region 4's training centre, on Saturday at his house in the district.

The car, a Ford model worth 1.7 million, was found at the suspect's home.

Police said Pol Col Phansiri on Friday wore a wig to disguise himself and visited a used car showroom in Bang Khae district before asking a salesman to start one of the cars for a test drive.

The suspect allegedly drove away with the vehicle. The salesman then lodged a complaint with police.

Police said after receiving the complaint, they started gathering evidence near the showroom and looking at CCTV camera footage taken from nearby.

The suspect stopped and left the car at the parking area of a temple on Bang Waek road, police said. The suspect then allegedly switched to his own car which was parked at the temple and drove to his home about 2 kilometres away.

According to the initial probe, Pol Col Phansiri said he had been unconscious during the robbery as he was not taking his medication. Police said Pol Col Phansiri was discharged in 2015 after committing a similar crime in Taling Chan district.
