There were 35 more Covid-19 fatalities and 4,059 new cases diagnosed over the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Tuesday morning.
There were 3,984 cases in the general population and 75 among prison inmates.
Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said in the afternoon briefing that the 35 new fatalities were 28-94 years old. Twenty-five of them were men and a Myanmar and a Lao national were among the deceased.
Of the new fatalities, 15 were in Bangkok, six in Samut Sakhon province, five in Samut Prakan, two in Chachoengsao and one each in Chon Buri, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Ayutthaya, Phuket, Suphan Buri and Udon Thani.
Fourteen of them had hypertension, while four had no reported chronic diseases. Fourteen of those who died contracted Covid-19 from family members.
The 4,059 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours included 3,963 local infections and 21 imported cases.
Of the local infections, 2,257 were confirmed at hospitals and 1,706 via mass testing.
Bangkok logged 1,154 new Covid-19 cases, followed by 696 in Samut Prakan, 335 in Chon Buri, 293 in Songkhla, 250 in Samut Sakhon, 211 in Pathum Thani, 169 in Nonthaburi, 162 in Nakhon Pathom, 81 in Pattani and 63 in Rayong.
The Bangkok metropolitan area had altogether 2,642 new cases while 1,321 others were recorded in other provinces.
“Greater Bangkok remains the key area for full-scale action,” Dr Taweesilp said.
Bangkok now had a total of 94 Covid-19 clusters, including three new ones: 12 new cases at an elderly care centre in Bang Khen district, 23 new cases at a wholesale shop of chives dumplings on Soi Therd Thai 21 in Thon Buri and 47 new cases at a construction workers’ camp on Phetkasem Sai Kao Road in Bangkok Yai.
Samut Prakan logged two new clusters – 326 cases at a shoe factory in Bang Phli district and seven cases at a processed food factory in Muang district.
Songkhla had a new cluster of 262 cases at a canned seafood factory in Sathing Phra district.
“The new clusters of three-digit numbers raised total new cases to about 4,000,” Dr Taweesilp said.
Smaller clusters were reported elsewhere. Samut Sakhon had a new cluster of six cases at a garment factory in Krathum Baen district, while Nakhon Pathom had 72 new cases -- shared labourers at four pig farms in Muang district.
Rayong reported a new cluster of 51 cases at a construction workers’ camp in Muang district, and Ayutthaya had a new cluster of 14 cases at a rescue centre in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district.
Prachin Buri logged a new cluster of eight cases at an artificial stone factory in Si Maha Phot district.
Fourteen of the 21 imported cases were Thai nationals who slipped across the Cambodian border into Chanthaburi province. The seven others were individual arrivals from Spain, Afghanistan, Mozambique, China, Uzbekistan, the Unite Arab Emirates and Malaysia.
As of Monday, 35,836 people were being treated for Covid-19 at hospitals, including 1,479 critically ill people and 410 dependent on ventilators.
About 5.68 million people had now received their first jab of Covid-19 vaccination, equivalent to 7.88% of the whole population, Dr Taweesilp said. They included 2.60 million people in Greater Bangkok, amounting to 17.51% of the capital area’s residents.
Over the past 24 hours, 2,047 Covid-19 patients were diagnosed recovered and were discharged from hospitals.
Since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began, there have been 196,502 Covid-19 patients, 160,410 of whom have recovered.
Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 225,365 Covid-19 cases, 187,836 of whom recovered.
The death toll was at 1,599 in the third wave and 1,693 from the beginning of the pandemic early last year.
Global Covid-19 cases rose by 278,182 in 24 hours to 179.54 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 5,836 to 3.89 million. The United States had the most cases at 34.42 million, up 9,306.
