Post-jab death sparks autopsy call

KHON KAEN: The family of a young police officer who died suddenly 11 days after receiving his second Covid-19 vaccination has requested an autopsy to clear up questions about his death.

Pol L/C Kittipong Chuekhamhod, of Muang district station in Maha Sarakham, collapsed and died while sharing a meal with his family at their house in the northeastern province around 9.30pm on Monday.

He had earlier gone to Bangkok where he received his second-dose of Covid-19 vaccine at the Police General Hospital on June 10.

He returned home to Maha Sarakham on June 20, and died the following day, police said yesterday.

His father took Kittipong's body to Srinagarind Hospital at Khon Kaen University yesterday, and asked for an autopsy to find out the exact cause of death. He was accompanied by relatives. The family did not talk to reporters.

A source said the family was later informed the hospital would transfer the case to the Police General Hospital for an autopsy. The father was taking his son's body to Bangkok, the source said.

Meanwhile, Chatchai Promlert, permanent secretary for the Interior Ministry, yesterday instructed governors of all provinces to trace the movements of people who have associated with infected students after a recent cluster of Covid-19 infections emerged at the Muslim religious school of Margaz Tabligh preaching centre in Yala's Muang district.

The cluster at the preaching centre has already spread to 402 patients across 12 southern provinces.

There were 111 positive cases reported in Narathiwat, 102 in Yala, 46 in Satun, 46 in Pattani, 36 at Songkhla, 18 in Krabi, 13 in Phatthalung, 10 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, nine in Surat Thani, five in Phangnga and three each in Trang and Phuket.

The Margaz community has a population of 4,000, including about 500 students from 17 provinces who frequently gather for social activities such as formal dinners in which they share utensils and trays.

They also perform religious rites without wearing masks, according to the the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The school has been closed and access to and from nearby areas heavily restricted as active case finding is conducted, said the CCSA.
