31 Covid deaths, 4,108 new cases

There were 31 Covid-19 fatalities and 4,108 new cases over the past 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Thursday morning.

There were 3,879 cases in the general population and 229 among prison inmates.

On Wednesday, 1,578 Covid-19 patients were diagnosed recovered and were discharged from hospitals.

Since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began, there have been 203,784 Covid-19 patients, 163,929 of whom have recovered.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 232,647 Covid-19 cases, 191,355 of whom recovered.

The death toll was at 1,681 in the third wave and 1,775 from the beginning of the pandemic early last year.

Apisamai Srirangson, spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said in the afternoon briefing that the 31 new fatalities were aged 30-93 years. Sixteen were men, 22 had hypertension, one had no chronic illness and 13 contracted the disease from relatives.

Bangkok recorded 28 more fatalities, Ayutthaya two and Lop Buri one.

The 4,108 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours included 3,865 local infections and 14 imported cases. Of the local infections, 2,835 were confirmed at hospitals and 1,030 via mass testing.

Bangkok continued to log the most new cases, 1,359, followed by 297 in Samut Prakan, 259 in Samut Sakhon, 254 in Chon Buri, 216 in Songkhla, 170 in Nonthaburi, 157 in Pathum Thani, 119 in Yala, 92 in Rayong and 91 in Nakhon Pathom.

Bangkok had 99 clusters of Covid-19 in 42 out of 50 districts, with three new clusters – 164 cases at a construction workers' camp on Soi Ramkhamhaeng 7 in Bang Kapi district, 126 cases at another construction camp on Soi Silom 9 in Bang Rak district and 165 cases at a helmet company in Bang Khunthian district.

Samut Sakhon had two new clusters of nine cases each at a rubber product factory and a shrimp factory in Muang district. Nonthaburi had a new cluster of 11 cases at a processed seaweed factory in Pak Kret district.

Pathum Thani had a new cluster of 39 cases including 33 young children at Rangsit Home for Babies in Thanyaburi district. The first case in the cluster was a driver, Dr Apisamai said.

The 14 imported cases were from Cambodia (12 Thai returnees, two returning illegally), Oman and Somalia.

On Wednesday, 39,517 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals. They included 1,564 critically ill people and 445 dependent on ventilators.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 426,328 in 24 hours to 180.36 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 8,516 to 3.91 million.The United States had the most cases at 34.45 million, up 12,942. India was second with 30.08 million cases, up 54,319.
