District goes into lockdown

KANCHANABURI: The border district of Sangkhla Buri has been locked down for 14 days and people ordered to stay home from 10pm to 4am, to curb an outbreak of Covid-19.

Governor Jirakiat Phumsawat, in his capacity as chairman of the provincial communicable disease control committee, signed the order, which became effective yesterday.

The order locks down Sangkhla Buri district and prohibits the transport of all kinds of goods through the Phra Chedi Sam Ong (Three Pagodas Pass) checkpoint in tambon Nong Lu until July 22.

Businesses that signed contracts for the purchase or transport of goods before the order was issued are reportedly exempted.

All flea markets have been closed, but not fresh markets and there is a stay-at-home curfew from 10pm–4am. In case of emergency, people must get permission from the district chief to leave their homes. People are prohibited from entering or leaving the district.

Offenders are liable to a maximum of one year in prison and/or a fine of 100,000 baht.

Sangkhla Buri has reported more than 30 cases in the latest Covid-19 outbreak, mostly people arriving from at-risk provinces.

In Myanmar's Payatongsu sub-district, which borders Sangkhla Buri, at least 10 people were confirmed infected. This led to locals calling on the authorities to impose a lockdown, an official said.

On Thursday, Tak province imposed a night curfew on migrant workers in Mae Sot district.
