Thailand logged 118 new Covid-19 fatalities and 14,150 new cases over the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Tuesday morning.
The new numbers marked a fall in new cases but a jump in fatalities compared to the nationwide tally announced on Monday.
The 14,150 new cases comprised 13,905 in the general population and 245 among prison inmates.
The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration reported later that the 118 new fatalities were 25-96 years old -- 115 Thais and one Myanmar, one Cambodian and one Indian national.
Fifty-six previously had hypertension and 36 suffered diabetes. Forty-four either lived in or visited outbreak areas, while 23 contracted the virus from family members.
Bangkok logged 40 new fatalities and Nonthaburi 20.
Elsewhere there were nine new fatalities in Nakhon Pathom; five in Suphan Buri; four each in Narathiwat, Pattani, Phetchaburi and Chon Buri; three each in Pathum Thani and Kamphaeng Phet; two each in Kalasin, Nakhon Sawan, Ayutthaya and Nakhon Nayok; and one each in Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan, Yala, Songkhla, Trang, Nakhon Ratchasima, Si Sa Ket, Sakon Nakhon, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Chachoengsao, Ratchaburi, Samut Songkhram and Saraburi.
One-third from mass testing
The 14,150 new Covid-19 cases over the previous 24 hours comprised 13,866 local infections and 39 imported cases.
Of the local infections, 10,407 were confirmed at hospitals and 3,459 via mass testing.
Greater Bangkok logged 5,521 new cases and 73 new fatalities. Four southern border provinces had 613 new cases and 10 new fatalities, with the remaining 67 provinces accounting for 7,732 new cases and 31 new deaths. The figures excluded data among prison inmates.
Bangkok alone had 2,635 new cases – 1,365 Thais and 61 migrants confirmed at hospitals, and 1,209 Thais detected via mass testing.
There were also 1,092 new cases in Samut Sakhon, 884 in Chon Buri, 719 in Samut Prakan, 536 in Nonthaburi, 486 in Chachoengsao, 314 in Rayong, 301 in Pathum Thani, 289 in Ubon Ratchathani and 279 in Sa Kaeo.
Prachuap Khiri Khan found a new cluster of 107 cases at a construction site in Hua Hin district while Rayong had a new cluster of 44 cases at a construction workers’ camp in Ban Chang district.
Chachoengsao found a new cluster of 22 cases at an electronic parts company in Muang district, while Chon Buri had a new cluster of 17 cases at a construction site in Koh Chan district. Khon Kaen located a new cluster of 15 cases at Sri Muang Thong market in Muang district.
The 39 imported cases were from Myanmar (18, including 10 illegal returnees and 7 illegal Myanmar immigrants), Cambodia (10 returnees), Malaysia (4 illegal returnees), South Africa (1), Qatar (1), Germany (2), the United Arab Emirates (1), the United States (1) and Japan (1),
Jabs pass 14 million
On Monday, 171,921 people received treatment for Covid-19. Of them, 4,284 were seriously ill and 954 were dependent on ventilators.
About 16.09 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have so far been administered in the country, including 3.67 million second jabs.
On Monday, 9,168 Covid-19 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals.
Since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began, there have been 497,965 Covid-19 patients, 323,217 of whom have recovered.
Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 526,828 Covid-19 cases, 350,643 of whom recovered.
The death toll was at 4,170 in the third wave and 4,264 from the beginning of the pandemic early last year.
Global Covid-19 cases rose by 443,343 in 24 hours to 195.34 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 7,390 to 4.18 million.
The US had the most cases at 35.29 million, up 35,816, and the most deaths at 627,039, up 132. Thailand ranked 46th globally by its 526,828 accumulated cases.
