Over 300 frontline medics in Samut Sakhon infected

Over 300 medical workers across three districts in Samut Sakhon have contracted Covid-19, according to the province's governor, Veerasak Vichitsangsri.

The governor gave the figures on his Facebook page yesterday, saying the province has distributed relief packages to the infected workers, which contracted the virus while on duty.

The workers are spread across Muang, Ban Phaeo and Krathum Baen districts.

The governor called on the government to provide frontline medics a Pfizer Covid-19 booster shot. Calling them the most important asset in the fight against Covid-19, Mr Veerasak said the workers deserve the best protection the government can offer.

Separately, Phangnga governor, Chamroen Thippayapongthada, yesterday ordered a lockdown in Khura Buri and Thai Muang districts after new clusters emerged there following interstate visits by infected individuals.

He assigned Phangnga's deputy governor to come up with a plan to restrict interprovincial travel.

The province reported 9 new cases in Khura Buri district, three in Thai Muang, and two in Kapong district yesterday, bringing its total to 662 cases.

Meanwhile, Prachuap Khiri Khan's chief of provincial public health office, Suriya Kuharat, reported 140 new cases, 105 of which were found in Hua Hin district yesterday.

Out of the 105 cases found in Hua Hin district, 85 were found among construction workers in Hua Hin municipality.

Twenty-five other workers who came into contact with the workers have been categorised as high-risk individuals, and all will be quarantined at their camp site, Dr Suriya said.

The workers are prohibited from going out and waste water in the camp will be drained into special pits, which will be treated before disposal, he added.

In Phitsanulok, the well-known temple, Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan, will be closed until Aug 31 under a provincial communicable disease committee to contain the Covid-19 outbreak there.

Yesterday morning, all three front gates of the temple were closed. Signs have been put up to notify the public of the closure.
