Apec policies to be mapped out

The government intends to focus on matters of security, particularly with regard to the fight against Covid-19, at next year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) meetings, which Thailand will host in November.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, who was in February appointed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha as the chairman of a sub-committee tasked with preparing security and traffic measures for the upcoming Apec meetings, yesterday headed a video conference of the sub-committee, said Maj Gen Phatchasak Patirupanon, assistant to the spokesman for Gen Prawit.

Gen Prawit had assigned the Royal Thai Police to map out a security and traffic control plan for the Apec meetings, while issuing a mandate to the Public Health Ministry to take care of the medical and healthcare aspects of the security plan, said Maj Gen Phatchasak. The armed forces were also assigned to support the national police to create a thoughtful and practical security plan for this important event, he said.

Gen Prawit had also emphasised that the security plan should be of relevance to the Covid-19 pandemic as well as more traditional threats to regional stability, said Maj Gen Phatchasak. Participants from all 21 economies will take part in the planned meetings of Apec in Thailand late next year, said the Foreign Ministry at yesterday's meeting.
