Records broken: 188 Covid deaths, 20,200 new cases

There were new record highs of 188 Covid-19 fatalities and 20,200 cases over the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Wednesday morning.

The previous one-day high of Covid-19 cases was 18,912 last Saturday, when the country also matched its earlier record high of fatalities at 178.

There were 20,013 cases in the general population and 187 among prison inmates.

On Tuesday, 17,975 Covid-19 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals.

The Covid-19 Information Centre said later that the 188 new fatalities ranged from 22-95 years old: 186 Thais, an Indian and a Cambodian.

Fifteen of them had no chronic diseases and four died either at home or during transportation to a hospital – two in Bangkok and one each in Pattani and Yala.

Among the new Covid deaths, 101 either visited or lived in outbreak areas, while 25 contracted the virus from family members.

Bangkok logged 92 new fatalities while nearby provinces had 19 deaths – 10 in Samut Prakan, five in Nonthaburi and four in Pathum Thani.

Southern provinces had 27 new deaths – 12 in Yala, seven in Pattani, three in Narathiwat and one each in Songkhla, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phangnga, Phuket and Surat Thani.

There were 21 new fatalities in the Northeast – four in Nakhon Ratchasima, three each in Udon Thani and Kalasin, two each in Nong Bua Lam Phu, Ubon Ratchathani and Yasothon, and one each in Khon Kaen, Roi Et, Mukdahan, Sakon Nakhon and Amnat Charoen.

The Centre also reported 21 new deaths in central plain provinces – six in Ang Thong, five in Chon Buri, three each in Chachoengsao and Rayong, and one each in Trat, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Prachin Buri and Saraburi.

Four northern provinces reported eight new deaths – three in Sukhothai, two each in Lampang and Nakhon Sawan, and one in Kamphaeng Phet.

New cases top 20,000 for the first time

The 20,200 new cases around the country on Tuesday -- and reported in the Wednesday briefing --included 19,992 local infections and 21 imported cases.

Of the local transmissions, 16,284 were confirmed at hospitals and 3,708 via mass testing.

Bangkok logged the most new daily cases at 4,118, followed by 1,678 in Chon Buri, 1,294 in Samut Sakhon, 945 in Samut Prakan, 908 in Nonthaburi, 556 in Chachoengsao, 522 in Saraburi, 456 in Nakhon Ratchasima, 396 in Ubon Ratchathani and 388 in Udon Thani.

Greater Bangkok had 7,811 new cases and 111 new fatalities. Four southern border provinces logged 990 new cases and 23 new deaths, while the remaining 67 provinces had 11,191 new cases and 52 new fatalities. The figures excluded data about prison inmates.

Samut Sakhon found two new clusters – 53 new cases at an electrical appliance company in Krathum Baen district and 11 cases at a wire company in Muang district.

Sa Kaeo had two new clusters – 44 cases at Ratana Tham market and 35 cases at Indochine market in Aranyaprathet district.

Pathum Thani located a new cluster of 25 cases at a sack company in Khlong Luang district.

Chon Buri had two new clusters – 25 cases at an auto company in Si Racha and 11 cases at a metal joint company in Muang district.

The 21 imported cases were from Qatar (1), Denmark (2), Japan (2), the United Arab Emirates (2), the United States (3), the United Kingdom (2), Israel (1) and Myanmar (8 illegal returnees).

Almost 5,000 seriously ill

On Tuesday a total of 211,076 people received treatment for Covid-19 at hospitals, including 4,910 seriously ill patients and 1,035 dependent on ventilators.

Since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began, there have been 643,522 Covid patients, 428,380 of whom have recovered.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 672,385 Covid-19 cases, 455,806 of whom recovered.

The death toll was at 5,409 in the third wave and 5,503 from the beginning of the pandemic early last year.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 616,473 in 24 hours to 200.26 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 9,948 to 4.26 million. The United States had the most cases at 36.05 million, up 104,758, and the most deaths at 630,497, up 516.

Thailand ranked 41st globally with its 672,385 accumulated cases.
