New field hospital opens for disabled

A special field hospital for Covid-19 patients with intellectual disabilities has opened at Rajanukul Institute.

Choosak Chantayanon, president of the Disabilities Council of Thailand, said people with intellectual disabilities are particularly vulnerable and sensitive during the spread of Covid-19, as they face difficulties communicating, taking drugs and wearing masks.

In response, the Rajanukul Institute secured space to set up a field hospital designed for the disabled. Mr Choosak said the hospital has been built to respond to the needs of the disabled to treat themselves at home. Previously, a field hospital for blind people opened at the Bangkok School for the Blind which halted its courses amid the pandemic.

Sirindhorn National Medical Rehabilitation Institute in June opened a field hospital for the disabled to admit those with mild symptoms. Currently, all of its 224 beds are occupied.

Mr Choosak said the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and Thai Red Cross Society have sought vaccines for over 200,000 disabled people in Bangkok and nearby.
