New Covid cases fall again, but 241 die

Thailand logged 13,821 new Covid-19 cases, the fewest since July 22, and 241 more fatalities during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Tuesday morning.

It was the second consecutive day the new caseload was smaller than 14,000.

There were 13,303 cases in the general population and 518 among prison inmates.

On Monday, 16,737 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

Oldest fatality was 100

The 241 new fatalities (up from 187 on the previous day) were between the ages of 22 and 100 years old, and included five Myanmar and one Cambodian nationals. Two of them were pregnant women in Buri Ram who had arrived from Samut Sakhon and Chanthaburi.

Bangkok continued to log the most new deaths – 85 (up from 24 on the previous day) -- while a further 51 (down from 53) were reported in the adjacent provinces of Samut Sakhon (20), Samut Prakan (11), Pathum Thani (8), Nakhon Pathom (6) and Nonthaburi (6).

Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded 62 more deaths (down from 77) – in Chon Buri (24), Suphan Buri (9), Chachoengsao (6), Phetchaburi (3), Kanchanaburi (3), Ang Thong (2), Sa Kaeo (2), Saraburi (2), Rayong (2), Lop Buri (2), Trat (2), Prachin Buri (1), Chanthaburi (1), Sing Buri (1) Prachuap Khiri Khan (1) and Ratchaburi (1).

The Northeast had 10 new fatalities (up from 6) – in Buri Ram (4), Si Sa Ket (2), Roi Et (2), Surin (1) and Ubon Ratchathani (1).

The South reported 20 more deaths (up from 19) – in Narathiwat (8), Ranong (3), Chumphon (2), Nakhon Si Thammarat (2), Phuket (2), Yala (2) and Pattani (1).

The North saw 13 new fatalities (up from 8) – in Tak (4), Phetchabun (3), Nakhon Sawan (3), Phitsanulok (1), Kamphaeng Phet (1) and Uthai Thani (1).

New cases rise in capital region

The 13,821 new cases (down from 13,988) included 13,297 local infections and six imported cases.

Of the local infections, 11,994 were confirmed at hospitals and 1,303 via mass testing.

Bangkok had 3,997 new cases (up from 3,610), followed by 1,140 in Samut Prakan (up from 868), 718 in Chon Buri (up from 703), 694 in Samut Sakhon (down from 711), 439 in Ratchaburi (up from 267), 357 in Rayong (down from 464), 311 in Ayutthaya (up from 294), 249 in Nonthaburi (down from 300), 232 in Phuket (down from 241) and 215 in Pattani (up from 154).

Greater Bangkok reported 6,388 new cases (up from 5,826) and 136 new deaths (up from 77). Four southern border provinces had 753 new cases (up from 729) and 11 new fatalities (up from nine), while 67 other provinces recorded 6,156 new cases (down from 6,972) and 93 new deaths (down from 100).

The six imported cases were from Tanzania (1), Myanmar (3) and Malaysia (2).

Deaths pass 13,000

Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 1,279,480 Covid-19 patients, 1,122,169 of whom have recovered to date.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,308,343 Covid-19 cases, with 1,149,595 complete recoveries so far.

The death toll stood at 13,189 during the third wave and 13,283 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The kingdom's all-time 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.

On Monday 145,465 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals (down from 148,622 on the previous day), including 4,487 seriously ill patients (down from 4,601) and 985 dependent on ventilators (down from 1,013).

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 399,932 in 24 hours (down from 425,644) to 221.98 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 6,641 (up from 6,608) to 4.59 million. The US had the most cases at 40.86 million, up 39,644 (up from 35,586), and the most deaths at 666,559, up 236 (down from 367).
