The kingdom's 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities is 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.

Dr Chawetsan Namwat, the Department of Disease Control’s director for control of  emergency diseases and health hazards, gave added details in the afternoon briefing.

He said 228 fatalities (down from 241 the previous day) were aged between six months and 100 years, and included three Myanmar, two Chinese, one Lao and one British nationals.

One was a pregnant woman in Lop Buri and three were children aged from 6 months to 2 years, all in Saraburi. Two of the children had a chronic disease. One adult died at home in Bangkok and a test later confirmed a Covid-19 infection.

Bangkok continued to have the most daily deaths, 50 (down from 85 the previous day). Another 60 (up from 51) were reported in the adjacent provinces of Samut Prakan (23), Samut Sakhon (15), Pathum Thani (12), Nakhon Pathom (7) and Nonthaburi (3).

“Bangkok was the only province with more than 1,000 new cases over the past 24 hours,” Dr Chawetsan said.

Greater Bangkok reported 5,946 new cases (down from 6,388) and 110 new deaths (down from 136). Four southern border provinces had 1,095 new cases (up from 753) and 10 new fatalities (down from 11), while 67 other provinces recorded 6,613 new cases (up from 6,156) and 107 new deaths (up from 93).

“New Covid-19 cases tend to decline and this is a good sign… The number dropped in many provinces in the North and the Northeast thanks to strict disease controls,” Dr Chawetsan said.

The 16 imported cases were from Canada (1), Indonesia (1), Turkey (1), the Philippines (2), Myanmar (2 illegal returnees), Malaysia (4 illegal returnees), Laos (2 illegal returnees) and Cambodia (3 illegal returnees).

On Tuesday 142,644 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals (down from 145,465 on the previous day), including 4,387 seriously ill patients suffering lung inflammation (down from 4,487) and 960 dependent on ventilators (down from 985).

The number of severely ill patients fell from 4,841 on Sept 1 to 4,387 on Tuesday. However, the number remained high, Dr Chawetsan said.

The increases in the US were attributed to the Delta variant of Covid-19, Dr Chawetsan said.
