Thailand logged 13,576 new Covid-19 cases and 117 more fatalities during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Sunday morning.

Greater Bangkok accounted for 53 fatalities and the rest were registered in 32 other provinces. the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, 12,492 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus -- fewer than the number of new infections.

The 13,576 new cases consisted of 13,181 in the general population, 395 among prison inmates and 13 imported from other countries.

Bangkok led new infections with 2,880 cases, followed by 1,030 in Samut Prakan and 926 in Chon Buri.

The 13 cases imported from abroad comprised four from Cambodia, three from Malaysia, two from the United Arab Emirates, and one each from the United States, Russia, Oman and China.

The CCSA said 28 million people -- 40% of the total population -- had received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, and 15 million, or 20%, had received the second shot.

The Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Ministry, which also tracks inoculations, said 97% of the 7.6 million people in Bangkok had received the first jab and 3 million -- 40% had received the second shot.

On Saturday 131,095 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 3,646 seriously ill patients and 768 dependent on ventilators.

Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 1,447,614 Covid-19 patients, 1,302,593 of whom have recovered to date.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,476,477 Covid-19 cases, with 1,330,238 complete recoveries so far.

The death toll stood at 15,269 during the third wave and 15,363 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The kingdom’s all-time 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 416,784 in 24 hours to 228,935,812. The worldwide death toll went up by 6,764 to 4,700,044. The United States had the most cases at 42,866,805, up 64,599 and the most deaths at 691,562, up 849.
