Fewest new Covid cases for more than 2 months

Thailand logged 10,288 new Covid-19 cases and 101 more fatalities during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Monday morning -- the fewest new cases for more than two months.

There were 10,161 cases in the general population and 127 among prison inmates.

The new caseload was smaller than the 12,353 announced on Sunday when the country recorded 125 more deaths.

On Sunday, 12,494 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

The 101 new fatalities were between the ages of 29 and 110 years old, and included two Myanmar and one Swiss nationals.

Bangkok logged 12 new deaths while a further 24 were reported in the adjacent provinces of Samut Prakan (16), Nakhon Pathom (4), Nonthaburi (2) and Samut Sakhon (2).

Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded 32 more deaths – in Chon Buri (6), Saraburi (4), Chachoengsao (4), Ratchaburi (3), Suphan Buri (3), Lop Buri (2), Prachin Buri (2), Rayong (2), Ayutthaya (1), Phetchaburi (1), Kanchanaburi (1), Chanthaburi (1), Trat (1) and Sa Kaeo (1).

The Northeast had eight new fatalities – in Khon Kaen (2), Loei (1), Sakon Nakhon (1), Chaiyaphum (1), Buri Ram (1), Nakhon Ratchasima (1) and Surin (1).

The South reported 17 more deaths – in Narathiwat (6), Chumphon (3), Phuket (3), Yala (2), Phangnga (1), Phatthalung (1) and Songkhla (1).

The North saw eight new fatalities – in Chiang Rai (2), Kamphaeng Phet (2), Nakhon Sawan (2), Phichit (1) and Uttaradit (1).

The 10,288 new cases included 10,149 local infections and 12 imported cases.

Of the local infections, 9,150 were confirmed at hospitals and 969 via mass testing.

Bangkok had 1,785 new cases, followed by 607 in Samut Prakan, 587 in Chon Buri, 466 in Songkhla, 445 in Yala, 355 in Rayong, 305 in Pattani, 300 in Narathiwat, 291 in Samut Sakhon and 274 in Ratchaburi.

Greater Bangkok reported 3,163 new cases and 36 new deaths. Four southern border provinces had 1,516 new cases and nine new fatalities, while 67 other provinces recorded 5,470 new cases and 56 new deaths.

“Infections in Bangkok, nearby provinces and other provinces decline but concern remains in southern border provinces,” Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said without elaboration.

The 12 imported cases were from Russia (2), Laos (2), Malaysia (4) and Cambodia (4).

On Sunday 120,156 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 3,341 seriously ill patients and 728 dependent on ventilators.Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 1,543,063 Covid-19 patients, 1,407,975 of whom have recovered to date.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,571,926 Covid-19 cases, with 1,435,401 complete recoveries so far.

The death toll stood at 16,275 during the third wave and 16,369 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The kingdom's all-time 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 323,764 in 24 hours to 232.59 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 4,965 to 4.76 million.

The United States had the most cases at 43.75 million, up 24,343, and the most deaths at 706,317, up 259. Thailand ranked 28th with its 1.57 million Covid-19 cases.
