Bomb explodes harmlessly in South

NARATHIWAT: A bomb exploded in roadside bushes in Sungai Padi district of this southern border province on Monday morning, but caused no damage.

Pol Capt Panuwat Sodanil, an investigator at Sungai Padi, said the bomb went off about 8am,  around 500 metres from Sungai Padi Secondary School in tambon Riko.

Police and soldiers from Ranger Task Force 48, accomnpied by a bomb disposal team,  were sent to the scene to investigate.

They searched the area where the explosion was reported to have occurred and found a steel pipe weighing about 5 kilogrammes and assorted debris.

Pol Col Apakorn Wirupakarak, the Sungai Padi police chief, said the explosion hurt no one and caused no damage to property. He believed it was intended only to cause a disturbance.
