KHON KAEN: The Chi River overflowed late on Tuesday night and officials began evacuating people living in low-lying areas with a major flood surge expected in the rain-soaked heart of the province on Wednesday evening.

Provincial governor Somsak Jangtrakul said the floodwater from the Chi River was continuing to rise. The water in tambon Tha Phra of Muang Khon Kaen district already exceeded two metres in depth.

Water blocked traffic and damaged roads linking Muang district and Phra Yuen district. All U-turns on the Mitrapharp Highway in Ban Kud Kwang in tambon Muang Kao were impassable, he said.

The governor said a surge of water from Chaiyaphum would arrive in Khon Kaen about 7pm on Wednesday, and he had ordered evacuations from low-lying areas.

Floodwater covered tambon Tha Phra and tambon Muang Kao of Muang district, as rain continued to fall on Wednesday.

Wat That Kud Kwang was among flooded locations in tambon Muang Kao. Staff of its school moved teaching equipment to high ground as the water was rising.

Teacher Wanchai Odthon said the water had risen quickly on Tuesday night. The flooding there was more severe than the great flood of 2011.
