CHANTHABURI: Runoff from persistent rains hit low-lying communities in Muang district on Tuesday night and people were evacuated from flooded housing estates to take shelter at the provincial hall.

The Public Relations Department reported that low-lying communities near Khao Sa Bab mountain, Khlong Nam Sai canal and nearby canals were flooded after it had rained for days in the eastern province. Local officials attributed the situation to the influence of depression Lionrock and Storm Kompasu.

Floodwater also reached communities in Muang Chanthaburi, Muang Tha Chang, Phlab Phla Narai and Koh Khwang municipalities. Affected people had to move belongings late at night.

Main roads of Muang district remained usable but local roads in housing estates were impassable. Commuters resorted to boats. People moved their vehicles to main roads.

Chanthaburi is among the eastern provinces at risk of flooding and runoff because a monsoon trough would cover the East and adjacent region until Saturday, according to the Office of the National Water Resources.
