NAKHON RATCHASIMA: An elderly woman was killed and three other people injured after a pickup truck crashed into a roadside shelter and a house in Cha-uat district on Tuesday afternoon.

Pol Lt Col Athip Nakmanee, chief investigator at Cha-ut police station, said the pick-up truck, driven by Pol Cpl Apidet Naosuwan, 23, accompanied by his 21-year-old girlfriend, crashed into a shelter by the Khuan Nong Hong-Lam Thap road at Moo 2 in tambon Ban Tun.

The vehicle went on to slam a house near the roadside shelter, killing the house owner, Fong Tipran, 76, and injuring her neighbour Phad Pengchan, 75, while they were having a chat in the house.

The policeman and his girlfriend, who was not identified, were also injured. The roadside shelter and the house were left in ruins.

The injured were taken by rescuers to Cha-uat Hospital.

Police said Pol Cpl Apidet and his girlfriend were on the way from Pa Phayom district in Phatthalung province, heading for Cha-uat district. Witnesses said the pick-up wobbled before ramming into the roadside shelter.

An investigation was underway to find the cause of the accident.
