KHON KAEN: The mayor of Tambon Phra Bu Municipality in Phra Yuen district of this northeastern province said on Tuesday he had been politically persecuted by unknown perpetrators who faked a resignation letter and sent it to the provincial governor.

Preecha Muangdaeng said there was no reason for him to resign since he had just been elected in the March 28 elections and had been in office for only four months.

Mr Preecha said he learned of the plot against him on Sept 14. On that day, while on the way back from a meeting at the city hall in Muang district, he received a phone call from the provincial legal affairs office asking him to confirm his resignation.

Stunned, he rushed back to the city hall and asked to see the letter.

He found the letter, dated Sept 9, was sent from the office of the Tambon Phra Bu Municipality, stamped with his signature and the municipality seal. In the letter, health problems were cited as the reason for his resignation.

Mr Preecha said both the signature and the seal were fake.

He filed a complaint with the Muang police station, believing this was politically motivated. He also submitted an explanation in writing to the provincial legal affairs office.

Chinakkorn Kaenkhong, the Phra Yuen district chief, said he had set up two committees - one at the district and the other at the municipality levels - to investigate.
