There were 8,452 new Covid-19 cases and 57 more fatalities recorded during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Wednesday morning.
There were 8,292 cases in the general population and 160 among prison inmates.
The number of new cases rose from the 7,706 announced on Tuesday, when the country recorded 66 more deaths.
On Tuesday, 8,449 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.
Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 1,846,452 Covid-19 patients, 1,730,871 of whom have recovered to date.
Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,875,315 Covid-19 cases, with 1,758,297 complete recoveries so far.
The death toll stood at 18,828 during the third wave and 18,922 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Sumanee Wacharasin, hazard communication director of the Department of Disease Control, said in the afternoon briefing that the latest 57 fatalities were aged between 30 and 98 years and included one Myanmar national and one Chinese.
Bangkok recorded nine new deaths while a further eight were reported in the adjacent provinces of Samut Prakan (5), Samut Sakhon (2) and Nonthaburi (1).
Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded 17 more deaths – in Chon Buri (5), Saraburi (3), Rayong (2), Phetchaburi (2), Ang Thong (1), Prachuap Khiri Khan (1), Ratchaburi (1), Suphan Buri (1) and Prachin Buri (1).
The Northeast had six new fatalities – in Ubon Ratchathani (2), Nakhon Ratchasima (2), Si Sa Ket (1) and Yasothon (1).
The South reported 13 more deaths – in Yala (4), Pattani (4), Phatthalung (2), Songkhla (1), Nakhon Si Thammarat (1) and Surat Thani (1).
The North saw four fatalities – in Tak (3) and Uttaradit (1).
“The numbers of new cases and fatalities in the country are falling along with the same trend worldwide,” Dr Sumanee said.
The 8,452 new cases included 8,285 local infections and seven imported cases.
Of the local infections, 7,654 were confirmed at hospitals and 631 via mass testing.
Bangkok had 859 new cases, followed by 551 in Songkhla, 532 in Pattani, 475 in Yala, 358 in Chanthaburi, 345 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 331 in Narathiwat, 306 in Samut Prakan, 297 in Chon Buri and 270 in Chiang Mai.
“No provinces logged more than 1,000 new cases. New cases in Bangkok have been under 1,000 for six days… New cases in southern border provinces namely Songkhla and Pattani dropped,” Dr Sumanee said.
Chanthaburi had the highest number of clusters: 132 clusters at construction camps and six clusters of factory workers, she said.
Greater Bangkok reported 1,377 new cases and 17 new deaths. Four southern border provinces had 1,889 new cases and nine more fatalities, while 67 other provinces recorded 5,019 new cases and 31 new deaths.
The seven imported cases were from Russia (2), Germany (1), Indonesia (1), Laos (2) and Myanmar (1).
On Tuesday 98,096 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals (down from 98,150 the previous day), including 2,355 seriously ill patients (down from 2,414) and 534 dependent on ventilators (down from 544).
“The number of severely ill patients and those dependent on ventilators are declining steadily,” Dr Sumanee said.
Global Covid-19 cases rose by 426,091 in 24 hours to 245.27 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 7,535 to 4.98 million.
The United States had the most cases at 46.49 million, up 69,634, and the most deaths at 759,932, up 1,451.
