9,658 new Covid cases, 84 more deaths

There were 9,658 new Covid-19 cases and 84 more fatalities recorded during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Thursday morning.

There were 9,440 cases in the general population and 218 among prison inmates.

The number of new cases rose from the 8,452 announced on Wednesday, when the country recorded 57 more deaths, and 7,786 cases and 66 deaths reported on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, 8,526 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 1,856,110 Covid-19 patients, 1,739,397 of whom have recovered to date.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,884,973 Covid-19 cases, with 1,766,823 complete recoveries so far.

The death toll stood at 18,912 during the third wave and 19,006 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 84 new fatalities were between the ages of 27 and 99 years old including two Myanmar nationals.

Bangkok recorded eight new deaths while a further 10 were reported in the adjacent provinces of Samut Prakan (5), Pathum Thani (3), Nakhon Pathom (1) and Samut Sakhon (1).

Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded 23 more deaths – in Rayong (5), Saraburi (3), Kanchanaburi (3), Chachoengsao (3), Nakhon Nayok (2), Chon Buri (2), Prachuap Khiri Khan (2), Ang Thong (1), Ratchaburi (1), and Sa Kaeo (1).

The Northeast had four new fatalities – in Khon Kaen (1), Roi Et (1), Nakhon Ratchasima (1) and Udon Thani (1).

The South reported 28 more deaths – in Nakhon Si Thammarat (11), Pattani (6), Yala (3), Phangnga (2), Krabi (2), Phuket (1), Chumphon (1), Narathiwat (1) and Satun (1).

The North saw 11 new fatalities – in Chiang Mai (4), Tak (3), Chiang Rai (1), Phetchabun (1), Sukhothai (1) and Chai Nat (1).

The 9,658 new cases included 9,429 local infections and 11 imported cases.

Of the local infections, 8,879 were confirmed at hospitals and 550 via mass testing.

Bangkok had 845 new cases, followed by 677 in Songkhla, 612 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 496 in Yala, 375 in Chon Buri, 369 in Pattani, 356 in Samut Prakan, 356 in Chiang Mai, 327 in Narathiwat and 280 in Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Greater Bangkok reported 1,580 new cases and 18 new deaths. Four southern border provinces had 1,869 new cases and 10 new fatalities, while 67 other provinces recorded 5,980 new cases and 53 new deaths.

The 11 imported cases were from Belgium (1), Russia (3), Myanmar (1), Cambodia (2) and Laos (4).

On Wednesday 99,144 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals (down from 98,096 on the previous day), including 2,281 seriously ill patients (down from 2,355) and 526 dependent on ventilators (down from 534).

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 473,582 in 24 hours to 245.77 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 8,597 to 4.99 million.

The United States had the most cases at 46.59 million, up 76,361, and the most deaths at 761,842, up 1,584.
