Covid prompts migrant worker database update

City Hall has begun updating its database on migrant workers from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar currently living and working in Bangkok, requiring both workers and their employers to re-submit their personal and employment information.

As the Covid-19 situation subsides, the update of the migrant worker database began on Monday to gather up-to-date information about migrant workers, which is crucial for managing the employment of these workers while still dealing with the pandemic, said Khachit Chatchawanit, the city clerk.

Migrant worker registration sections at all 50 district offices are now handling at most 30 workers per day from Monday to Friday and at most 50 people every Saturday, he said.

Those intending to visit these district offices to update their information are required to book an appointment in advance so to ensure offices do not become overcrowded, he said.

Employers hiring Cambodian, Lao and Myanmar workers are also required to submit online their requests to update employment information and for new identification cards for their migrant employees, he said.

From Nov 22, the submission will be allowed to be made on the website http://nonthaiidbkk.bangkok.go.th, he said.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration also plans to use mobile apps such as Thai Chana and Mor Chana to track migrant workers for the sake of Covid-19 control, he said.

These apps will also be more convenient for workers and their employers as they will no longer have to file their travel records manually as they previously had to, he said.

Both employers and their migrant workers are still required to strictly follow Covid-19 control measures, including the so-called Covid-Free Setting measure, he said.
