Thailand logged 6,524 new Covid-19 cases and 56 more fatalities during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, 7,191 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said on Wednesday afternoon 11 million people have yet to be vaccinated and urged them to receive the first jab.

Most of them were in 10 provinces — Tak, Ratchaburi, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Songkhla, Pattani and Yala were in the top 10 provinces with the most new cases on Tuesday, although Bangkok led with 894 new infections.

"All concerned agencies and community leaders including kamnan and village chiefs should speed up the vaccination campaign," Sumanee Wacharasint, director of the Risk Communication and Health Behavioural Development Bureau, said in the briefing.

As of Tuesday, 45.7 million people, or 63.4% of total population, had received the first shot and 37.5 million people, or 52.1%, were double-jabbed.

Dr Sumanee said the country aimed to see 70% of the population with at least the first shot by the end of this month.

The country imported 12 new cases from the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Egypt, Belgium, Cambodia and Myanmar.

It logged 56 deaths, led by eight in Bangkok, five in Nakhon Si Thammarat and four each in Songkhla and Lop Buri.

On Tuesday, 91,382 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 1,739 seriously ill patients and 407 dependent on ventilators.

Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 2,008,361 Covid-19 patients, 1,898,217 of whom have recovered to date.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 2,037,224 Covid-19 cases, with 1,925,643 complete recoveries so far.

The death toll stood at 20,105 during the third wave and 20,199 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The kingdom’s all-time 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.
