The Ministry of Transport will start issuing tickets for the Red Line electric commuter train service from Monday, with the maximum fare set at 42 baht.

The suburban railway system is seeing a growing number of commuters, currently averaging 8,817 a day.

To ease their burden, the Land Transport Department and Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) have upgraded bus routes to connect with the Red Line as well as long-distance and suburban train systems.

After a meeting on Monday regarding the launch and management of the Red Line railway and Bang Sue Grand Station, Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said the fare rate and current state of the joint ticketing system were among the top agenda points.

Mr Saksayam said fares will start at 12 baht for the first three years from 2022-2025, and go up to 42 baht.

A monthly travel card for adults using the Red Line will work out at 25-35 baht per trip, with special promotions including a 50% discount available for children under 14 or smaller than 120 centimetres, as well as monks and elderly people. Students will receive a 10% discount.

Fares will be waived for children under 90cm and people with disabilities, Mr Saksayam said.

Regarding the state of readiness of the planned joint ticketing system, the SRT will make sure it is ready to work with the Blue and Purple lines by February.

Mobile kiosks will also be set up for commuters using the Red Line and Bang Sue Grand Station, Mr Saksayam added.
