Govt to file poll-tweak drafts soon

The coalition government is expected to submit draft amendments to two organic laws related to the election system for parliamentary scrutiny late next month.

The amendments to the two organic laws on the election of MPs and political parties are necessary following the promulgation of the constitutional amendment to restore the two-ballot electoral system.

This marks a departure from the single-ballot method used in the 2019 general election.

Two ballots will be used in parliamentary polls, one for choosing a constituency MP and the other for a list MP. The number of constituency MPs will be increased from 350 to 400 and the number of list MPs will be decreased from 150 to 100.

Wichian Chaowalit, head of a working panel under government whips, said the coalition partners have agreed to co-sponsor the planned amendments and their versions are expected to be ready in late December.

He said political parties have prepared their own drafts and the Democrat Party, the Chartthaipattana Party and the Palang Pracharath Party have handed in theirs for study.

According to Mr Wichian, the cabinet is expected to submit its own versions of the amendments in January.

He said the working panel has seen the draft amendment on the elections of MPs prepared by the Election Commission (EC) but has yet to discuss the details.
