Thailand logged 4,753 new Covid-19 cases and 27 more fatalities recorded during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Monday morning.
There were 4,696 cases in the general population and 57 among prison inmates.
The number of new cases dropped from 5,854 announced on Sunday, when the country recorded 30 more deaths. The new caseload was below 5,000 for the first time since June.
The 27 new fatalities were between the ages of 29 and 91 years old.
Bangkok recorded two new deaths while another was reported in the adjacent province of Nakhon Pathom.
Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded 10 more deaths - in Rayong (2), Ratchaburi (2), Lop Buri (2), Chanthaburi (1), Chachoengsao (1), Sa Kaeo (1) and Saraburi (1).
The South reported five more deaths – in Pattani (2), Surat Thani (2) and Trang (1).
The North saw six new fatalities – in Mae Hong Son (3), Chiang Mai (1), Nan (1) and Sukhothai (1).
The Northeast had three fatalities in Chaiyaphum, Mukdahan and Udon Thani
The 4,753 new cases included 4,684 local infections and 12 imported cases. Of the local infections, 4,486 were confirmed at hospitals and 198 via mass testing.
Bangkok had 605 new cases, followed by 381 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 354 in Songkhla, 254 in Surat Thani, 186 in Chiang Mai, 149 in Samut Prakan, 147 in Chon Buri, 133 in Phuket, 121 in Pattani and 110 in Nakhon Ratchasima.
The 12 imported cases were from the United Kingdom (3), the United Arab Emirates (1), Malaysia (1), Israel (2), South Korea (1), the United States (2), Germany (1) and Cambodia (1).
Since the country reopened to visitors on Nov 1, 122,398 people arrived by air and 160 of them (0.13%) were confirmed with Covid-19.
On Sunday 77,811 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 1,369 seriously ill patients and 330 dependent on ventilators.
Global Covid-19 cases rose by 387,788 in 24 hours to 261.75 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 4,257 to 5.21 million.
Apisamai Srirangson, assistant spokesperson for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said that new daily cases soared in many countries including the UK with 37,681 new cases, Turkey (21,655), Germany (38,444), France (31,648) and Italy (12,932).
“These countries have wide coverage of vaccination and many of them even eased controls and allowed their people to take off face masks and shops to freely open. Now many countries restore their strict controls which cause protests in many areas,” she said.
New cases in Asia were stable but those in Vietnam soared (12,936), Dr Apisamai said.
On Sunday, 6,165 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.
Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 2,082,703 Covid-19 patients, 1,985,595 of whom have recovered to date.
Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 2,111,566 Covid-19 cases, with 2,013,021 complete recoveries so far.
The death toll stood at 20,640 during the third wave and 20,734 since the beginning of the pandemic.
