4,912 new Covid cases, 33 new deaths

63.6% of population has now received at least two doses of vaccine

Thailand logged 4,912 new Covid-19 cases and 33 new fatalities during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry said on Friday.

The number of new cases dropped by 59 from the previous 24-hour period and the death toll was unchanged, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said.

Vaccinations continue to make good progress, with 63.6% of the eligible population having received at least two doses, and 73.7% with at least one dose.

On Thursday, 5,844 Covid patients were discharged from hospitals.

Since the pandemic started early last year, 2,130,641 people have contracted the coronavirus disease and 2,037,000 have recovered. All but 30,000 of the infections have occurred since April 1 of this year.

A total of 20,880 people have died since the beginning of the pandemic, all but 96 of them since April 1.

The kingdom’s all-time 24-hour high of Covid fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.

The 16 men and 17 women people whose deaths were reported on Friday were aged 30 to 97 years. Thirty-two were Thais and the remaining was an unknown nationality.

Bangkok recorded four new deaths, down by one from the previous day, while the adjacent provinces of Nakhon Pathom, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan recorded one death each.

Other central plains provinces recorded 10 more deaths (+7) — in Kanchanaburi (3), Phetchaburi (2), Chachoengsao (1), Prachuap Khiri Khan (1), Prachin Buri (1), Ayutthaya (1) and Ratchaburi (1).

The South reported 11 more deaths (+ 1) — in Krabi (3), Pattani (2), Yala (2), Satun (2), Trang (1) and Surat Thani (1).

The North had 2 more fatalities (-4) — one each in Mae Hong Son and Tak.

The Northeast saw 3 new deaths (-2) — one each in Nakhon Ratchasima, Surin and Nong Bua Lamphu.

The 4,912 new cases comprised 4,899 local infections and 13 imported cases. Of the local infections, 4,606 were confirmed at hospitals, 136 via mass testing and 157 in prisons.

Bangkok had 685 daily cases, down by 93 from the previous day, followed by 414 (+85) in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 312 (+10) in Songkhla, 209 (+71) in Pattani, 181 (-15) in Surat Thani, 179 (-29) in Chiang Mai, 177 (+38) in Chon Buri, 116 (-24) in Samut Prakan and 103 each in (+1) Khon Kaen and Yala

The 13 imported cases were from Germany (1), the United Arab Emirates (1), France (1), Qatar (1), Turkey (1), Israel (2), the United Kingdom (2) and Cambodia (4).

On Thursday, 72,761 people were being treated for Covid-19 in hospitals including 1,315 seriously ill patients and 338 on ventilators

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 685,799 in 24 hours to 264.43 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 7,095 to 5.24 million. The United States had the most cases at 49.71 million, up 131,822.
