Cops find nearly a tonne of 'ice'

The Customs Department has found 897 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine or "ice", with a street value of over 2.7 billion baht, hidden in 24 cardboard boxes of silicone sheets.

Officials said they were about to be smuggled to Taiwan at the Bangkok port in Klong Toey. Department director-general Patchara Anuntasilpa said yesterday he obtained reports from his officials who inspected boxes at the port and found the drugs hidden inside.

He said initial investigations found the boxes had been brought to a cargo container of a shipping company via a truck from a company in the North.

Mr Patchara said further investigations were under way to find who was involved in the drug shipment.

However, he said the attempted narcotics smuggling bore no connection with the confiscation of 400kg of high-purity heroin seized in Taiwan early last month, even though that shipment was believed to have originated in northern Thailand.
