There were 41 more Covid-19 fatalities and 3,537 new cases registered during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry said on Friday morning.

There were 3,355 cases in the general population and 182 among prison inmates.

This compared with 26 coronavirus-related fatalities and 3,684 new cases reported on Thursday morning.

On Thursday, 5,459 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 2,185,497 Covid-19 cases, with 2,120,691 complete recoveries so far.

The vast majority of the Covid cases and deaths have occurred since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began.

The death toll stood at 21,233 during the third wave and 21,327 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The kingdom's 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 13. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.

Apisamai Srirangson, a spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said in the afternoon briefing that the latest 41 deaths were aged 24 to 93 years and included two foreigners, one Myanmar and one British citizen.

Bangkok logged two more deaths while another was reported in the adjacent province of Samut Sakhon.

Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded 11 more deaths - in Chachoengsao (2), Ayutthaya (2), Lop Buri (2), Chon Buri (1), Prachuap Khiri Khan (1), Ratchaburi (1), Saraburi (1) and Suphan Buri (1).

The Northeast reported three fatalities - in Nakhon Ratchasima (2) and Kalasin (1).

The South reported 17 deaths – Nakhon Si Thammarat (6 – equal highest nationally), Songkhla (3), Trang (2), Yala (2), Chumphon (1), Pattani (1), Phatthalung (1) and Satun (1).

The North saw seven more fatalities - in Chiang Mai (6 – equal highest) and Mae Hong Son (1).

The 3,537 new cases included 3,338 local infections and 17 imported cases.

Of the local infections, 3,293 were confirmed at hospitals and 45 via mass testing.

Bangkok had 578 new cases, followed by 208 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 166 in Chon Buri, 137 in Songkhla, 128 in Samut Prakan, 89 in Surat Thani, 78 in Prachuap Khiri Khan, 77 in Phatthalung, 74 in Pattani and 65 in Chiang Mai.

Dr Apisamai said only 1,080 of  59,512 people given antigen tests on Thursday were positive.

“A positive percentage of only 1.8 is considered as falling sharply,” Dr Apisamai said.

There were new Covid-19 clusters at prisons in Krabi (137 cases) and Pattani (36); factories and offices in Rayong, Chon Buri and Prachin Buri; a department store in Prachuap Khiri Khan; markets in Ang Thong, Lop Buri, Ubon Ratchathani and Nakhon Si Thammarat; funerals in Narathiwat and Mae Hong Son; workers’ camps in Bangkok (56 cases in 120 workers at a camp in Klong Toey district) and in Chon Buri; a grilled pork eatery in Bangkok (12 cases in Bang Kapi district); and schools in Samut Prakan, Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

More positively, there were no new cases in Uttaradit and Amnat Charoen provinces, she said.

On Thursday 43,479 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals (down from 45,442 on the previous day), including 972 seriously ill patients (down from 1,000) and 254 dependent on ventilators (down from 272).

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 711,255 in 24 hours to 273.22 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 6,549 to 5.35 million. The US had the most cases at 51.43 million, up 144,871, and the most deaths at 824,520, up 997.

Numbers of new cases were rising in the US and in Europe, Dr Apisamai said.

“Despite rising caseloads, fatalities remain low thanks to vaccination,” she said.
