Woman charged over fake Japan jobs

A woman has been charged with posing as a job broker and defrauding people of money paid in fees to secure jobs as a masseuse in Japan, according to the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD).

Pawinee Yomseedum, 37, was arrested in tambon Ban Khor of Muang district, Khon Kaen, and charged with fraud after using a Facebook account in her own name to advertise the job placement service, Pol Col Patthanapong Sripinproh, chief of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Sub-Division 2, said yesterday.

She claimed to be able to secure the work in Japan for those willing to pay her a service fee of 5,900 baht. Many transferred money to her bank account which she later closed, severing contact with those who sent her money.

The victims banded together and filed a complaint with the sub-division which obtained a court warrant for her arrest.

Ms Pawinee denied the charge and told police she has returned the money. However, checks found several outstanding warrants for her arrest on prior labour fraud cases in Bangkok and Khon Kaen.

In a separate case, Boonyaporn Jirapatpokakul, 37, was nabbed recently in Hat Yai district of Songkhla on human trafficking charges.

ATPD commander Pol Maj Gen Wiwat Khamchamnan said Ms Boonyaporn is suspected of colluding with several Chinese nationals in June to offer jobs on social media in Mae Sot district of Tak.

Many applied for the jobs, but when they met the gang in Tak they were taken across the border to Myawaddy in Myanmar where they were made to work as call centre scammers.
