Cop 'was going at 108-128kph'

The police lance corporal who rode a super bike that struck down a doctor at a pedestrian crossing on Jan 21 will face a speeding charge, as forensic tests show his bike was travelling between 108-128kph at the time of the incident.

Norawich: Faces new charge

Pol L/C Norawich Buadok has been charged with speeding and is expected to meet police to formally hear the charge in two days, said Pol Maj Gen Jirasan Kaewsang-ek, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB).

Pol L/C Norawich's Ducati motorbike hit Dr Waraluck Supawatjariyakul, an ophthalmologist, at the crossing on Phaya Thai Road in Ratchathewi district. The police lance corporal, who is currently on leave, may also be charged with driving a vehicle with disregard for safety of others.

Experts have inspected the scene and forensic examination results have concluded the Ducati was travelling between 108-128kph.

The investigation is likely to be wrapped up and Pol L/C Norawich handed to prosecutors in the middle of next month, the deputy city police chief said.

Pol L/C Norawich is also being probed for a disciplinary violation in connection with the crash. The punishment for acts of recklessness, for which Pol L/C Norawich is being probed, is not serious.

He can return to work after taking leave. However, if he is eventually convicted of the criminal charges and serves a jail term, he will be expelled from the force.

Meanwhile, city police said there is not much the police can do to improve pedestrian crossing safety, except campaigning for motorists to exercise more discipline, according to the MPB.

However, deputy national police chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapat said police were looking to designate a zone in which traffic must slow down ahead of a pedestrian crossing.

In the zones, the speed limit will be set at 30km per hour.
