17,349 new Covid cases, 22 more deaths

The country registered 22 more Covid-19 fatalities and 17,349 new cases during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Thursday morning.

This compared with the 27 coronavirus-related fatalities and 16,462 new cases reported on Wednesday morning.

The 22 latest fatalities were aged between 50 and 105 years.

Bangkok had two new coronavirus-related deaths and there was one more in the adjacent province of Samut Prakan.

Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded seven more deaths – one each in Chon Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Samut Songkhram, Sa Kaeo, Saraburi, Suphan Buri and Ratchaburi.

The Northeast had eight new fatalities - in Roi Et (3), Khon Kaen (1), Nakhon Ratchasima (1), Maha Sarakham (1), Si Sa Ket (1) and Ubon Ratchathani (1).

The South reported three more deaths - in Surat Thani (2) and Chumphon (1).

The North saw one more fatality, in Chiang Rai.

There were 16,935 new cases in the general population, 169 among prison inmates and 245 imported cases.

Of the local Covid-19 infections, 16,727 were confirmed at hospitals and 208 via mass testing.

Bangkok still had the most new cases at 3,063, followed by 866 in Samut Prakan, 821 in Chon Buri, 743 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 510 in Phuket, 423 in Nonthaburi, 415 in Nakhon Ratchasima, 414 in Samut Sakhon, 395 in Pathum Thani and 339 in Buri Ram.

The 245 imported cases included 85 from Russia, 22 from Cambodia, 17 from Germany, 14 from France and 13 from the United Arab Emirates.

On Wednesday 144,061 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 728 seriously ill patients with lung inflammation and 163 dependent on ventilators.

The 24-hour period also saw 11,561 Covid-19 patients discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

Since the pandemic started in early 2020, there have been 2,656,411 Covid-19 cases, including 432,976 cases this year, with 2,489,812 complete recoveries to date.

The death toll stood at 22,538 since the beginning of the pandemic, including 840 so far this year.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 2.09 million in 24 hours to 418.16 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 11,311 to 5.86 million.

The United States had the most cases at 79.78 million, up 114,668, and the most deaths at 952,603, up 2,802.
