PHUKET: About 80 tourists from Ukraine and Russia gathered in front of the Royal Phuket Marina Hotel on Thepkasattri road in Muang district on Monday morning in protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The protest started about 10am.

Pol Lt Col Ekachai Siri, of the tourist police, said most were from Ukraine, with maybe 10 Russians. They held aloft placards with messages calling for an end to the fighting and violence against the innocent people of Ukraine.

They were soon joined by another group of foreigners who had earlier protested in front of the temporary office of the Russian consulate, which is also on Thepkasattri road in Muang district.

Police were deployed to esnure law and order.

The demonstrators sang the Ukrainian national anthem and demanded Ukraine remain free.

No Thais were seen at the protest site.

The rally ended about 10.30am.
