Govt talks up breadth of welfare aid

More than 40 million people have benefited from the government's financial stimulus schemes including the Khon La Khrueng co-payment scheme, says government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana.

Mr Thanakorn yesterday said the financial aid was a policy favoured by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to help spur an economic rebound after the Covid-19 fallout.

Many business operators including small-scale businesses and low-priced Blue Flag stores also have benefited from the government's projects, Mr Thanakorn said.

The schemes comprise phase four of the co-payment schemes for welfare cardholders as well as the second phase of another project to assist those in need of help.

Citing data released on Thursday, 40.72 million people spent 53.88 billion baht as a result of the policy package.

Of that, 13.28 million people had spent 24.3 billion baht on the project to assist state welfare cardholders, and 1.21 million of those people in need of special assistance had spent 352.97 million baht.

For phase four of the co-payment scheme, 26.23 million people had spent 49.42 billion baht of which half was matched by the government.

However, about 2.6 million people were disqualified for failure to use the privileges by Feb 28.

Under the new phase, people can use the co-payment scheme until the end of next month or until the amount of subsidy, cabbed at 1,200 baht, is used up, Mr Thanakorn said.

The Finance Ministry has been instructed to work with economic agencies to plan various further aid measures, he added.
